🎯 Objectives

  • Understanding 🧠 the concepts of Successful Aging 🧓 🌟
  • Understanding 🧠 predictors 🔮 of health 💚 in aging 🧓 process 📊
  • Understanding 🧠 Wisdom 🦉 💡
  • Understanding 🧠 what Islam ☪️ says about wisdom 🦉 📖

🌟 What is Successful Aging 🧓?

The term 📖 successful aging 🧓 was popularized 📢 by Robert Havighurst 👨‍🔬 (1961) when he wrote ✍️ about "adding life 🌱 to years 📅" in the first issue of The Gerontologist 📚.

🔬 MacArthur Foundation Study 📊

The MacArthur Foundation Study 📊 of Successful Aging 🧓 (1988-1996 📅) was conducted by John Rowe 👨‍🔬 and a multidisciplinary group 👥 of colleagues 👨‍🔬👩‍🔬. They investigated 🔍 physical 💪, social 🤝, and psychological 🧠 factors related to abilities 🏆, health 💚, and well-being 😊.

A sample 📊 of 1189 healthy adult volunteers 🤝 between ages 📅 70 and 79 was selected ✅ from a pool of 4030 potential participants 👥, using physical 💪 and cognitive 🧠 criteria. These high-functioning 🏆 adults 👴👵 participated in a 90-minute ⏰ personal interview 🎙️ and were followed 🔍 for an average of 7 years 📅.

📊 Three Components of Successful Aging 🧓

  • Avoiding ⛔ disease 🩺🏥
  • Engaging 🤝 with life 🌿🌟
  • Maintaining 💪 physical 🏋️ and cognitive 🧠 functioning ⚙️

🤝 Support 🤲 Required for Successful Aging 🧓

Social support 🤝 is most potent 💪 when it is mutual 🔄—the support 🤲 given is balanced ⚖️ by support received 📨. Two kinds of support 🤲 are important ⭐:

  • Socioemotional support 💕: Liking 👍 and loving ❤️
  • Instrumental support 🛠️: Assistance 🤲 when someone is in need 🆘

Key findings 🔍 from MacArthur data 📊:

  • Support 🤲 increased 📈 over time ⏰
  • Respondents 👥 with more social ties 🔗 showed fewer declines 📉 in functioning ⚙️💪
  • Effects 📊 of social ties 🔗 varied by gender 👨👩 and baseline physical 💪 capabilities
  • Men 👨 received emotional support 💕 primarily from their spouses 👫
  • Women 👩 drew more heavily on friends 👭, relatives 👨‍👩‍👧 and children 👶 for emotional support 💕

💼 Productive Activity 🎯 in Later Adulthood 🧓

Glass et al. (1995 📚) examined 🔍 patterns 📈 of change in activities 🎪:

  • Highest functioning 🏆 cohort was significantly more productive 💼 than the comparison group 👥📈
  • Changes 🔄 in productivity 💼 over time ⏰ were associated with more hospital 🏥 admissions and strokes 🩺📉
  • Age 📅, marriage 💍, and increased mastery 🏆 of certain skills 💪 were related to greater protection 🛡️ against declines 📉

Williamson (2002 📚) suggests that sustained 💪 physical activity 🏃 helps maintain 🔧 healthy functioning 💚, and interruptions ⛔ of physical activity regimens 📊 often precipitate ⚠️ declines 📉 in overall well-being 😊.

🧓 Lifestyle 🌿 Predictive of Successful Aging 🌟 (Vaillant, 2002)

Vaillant 👨‍🔬 studied 📊 256 Caucasian, socially advantaged 🏆 Harvard 🎓 participants from the late 1930s 📅 for 80 years ⏰. More than 80% lived 🎉 past their 80th birthdays 🎂 (vs. only 30% of their contemporaries 👥)!

📋 Lifestyle 🌿 Predictors 🔮 of Healthy Aging 🧓💚

  • Not smoking 🚭 or stopping ⛔ smoking while young 👦✅
  • Coping 🛡️ adaptively with mature defenses 🧠
  • Not abusing ❌ alcohol 🍺
  • Maintaining 💪 a healthy weight ⚖️
  • A stable 🏠 marriage 💍❤️
  • Some exercise 🏃🏋️
  • Being educated 🎓📚

💊 Predictors 🔮 of Health 💚

These variables 📊 distinguished people 👥 on the ends of the health 💚 spectrum:

Group 👥 Description 📝
Happy-Well 😊💚 (62 individuals 👥) Good health 💚 objectively and subjectively, biologically 🧬 and psychologically 🧠
Sad-Sick 😔🩺 (40 individuals 👥) Unhappy 😢 in at least one dimension: mental health 🧠, social support 🤝, or life satisfaction 🌿

Most robust 💪 predictor 🔮: The extent to which people 👥 used mature psychological 🧠 coping styles 🛡️ (e.g., altruism 🤲, humor 😂) in everyday life 🌿!

✨ Successful Aging 🧓: The Nun Study 📚

Danner et al. (2001 📊) studied 🔍 autobiographies 📝 of 180 Catholic nuns 👩‍🧬 written ✍️ in early 20th century 📅. They demonstrated ✅ that positive emotional content 😊💕 in the writings 📝 was inversely correlated 📉 with risk of mortality 💀 60 years later! ⏰

These nuns 👩, who had a lifestyle 🌿 conducive to successful aging 🧓, were more likely 📊 to live 🎉 past their 70th and 80th birthdays 🎂 if they had told stories 📖 laden with positive emotions 😊❤️ decades before!

🧪 Personal Mini-Experiments 🔬

🧪 Test ✅ Your Mentorship 👨‍🏫

According to resilience 💪 research 📊, a warm relationship ❤️ with one caring adult 🤲 can bring out the positive ✨ in children 👶 and youth 👦👧. Test ✅ the effectiveness 🏆 of your own mentorship 👨‍🏫 through ongoing work 💼 with any community-based 🏘️ mentoring program 🤝.

🔵 Build 🏗️ a Stronger Social Circle 🤝

Draw ✍️ four circles 🔵, one in the middle. In the middle circle 🔵, write ✍️ "Me 👤," and then fill in remaining circles with names 📝 of people 👥 to whom you give 🤲 your time ⏰ and talents 🎨 regularly. Consider 🧠 how you can maintain 💪 people closest ❤️ to you and bring 🔗 others closer. Act on one thought 💭—give 🤲 your time ⏰ or talent 🎨 to someone close to you 💕!

📖 Collect 📚 Stories 📖 of Successful Aging 🧓

Approach 🚶 five exuberant 🌟 people 👥 aged 60+ 🧓 and ask ❓:

  • How well are you enjoying 😊 your career 💼/retirement 🎉? 🌴
  • How would you describe 📝 your last vacation 🏖️? ✈️
  • What personal relationships 🤝 have been important ⭐ since you turned 50 🎂? ❤️
"God 🙏 grant me the serenity 🌿 to accept the things 📦 I cannot change ❌, courage 🦁 to change the things 🔄 I can, and the wisdom 🦉 to know 🧠 the difference." ✨
— Reinhold Niebuhr

⚔️ Wisdom 🦉 and Courage 🦁

Some philosophers 🧔 and theologians 🙏 consider wisdom 🦉 (prudence) and courage 🦁 (fortitude) to be two of the four cardinal virtues 💎 (along with justice ⚖️ and temperance ⚖️).

These primary virtues 💎, traditionally ranked 📊 in the order prudence 🦉, justice ⚖️, fortitude 🦁, and temperance ⚖️, are: 📋

"Cognitive 🧠 and motivational 💪 dispositions that in themselves designate not only adaptive fitness 🎯 for individual's 👤 achievements 🏆, but also the idea of convergence 🔗 of individual goal 🎯 achievements with becoming and being a good person ✨ from a communal 🤝 and social-ethical ⚖️ point of view." 🌟
— Baltes et al., 2002 📚

The cardinal virtues 💎 facilitate personal development 🌱; practicing 💪 them may foster 🌿 the development 🌱 of social resources 🤝 that spark ✨ the growth 📈 of other people 👥. Both wisdom 🦉 and courage 🦁 can inform 💡 human choices 🎯 and fuel pursuits 🚀 leading to enhanced personal functioning 💪 and communal good 🏘️🏆.

Wisdom 🦉 vs. Courage 🦁 Confusion: From The Wizard of Oz 🧙‍♂️:

"As for you 👤, my fine friend 🤝, you are a victim 😯 of disorganized thinking 🧠. You are under the unfortunate delusion 💭 that, simply because you run away 🏃 from danger ⚠️, you have no courage 🦁. You are confusing ❓ courage 🦁 with wisdom 🦉." 🦁💭

🦉 What is Wisdom 🧠?

📚 Baltes & Kunzmann (2003)

"Expert knowledge 📚 and judgment ⚖️ about important ⭐, difficult 💪 and uncertain ❓ questions 🧠 associated with the meaning 💡 and conduct 🚶 of life 🌿." 💎

📚 Kramer (2000)

"A constellation 🌟 of personal attributes 👤 reflecting a high degree 📈 of cognitive 🧠, affective 💕, and behavioral 🎯 maturity... that allows for an unusual degree of sensitivity 🌸, broad-mindedness 🌍, and concern ❤️ for humanity 👥."

💡 Wisdom 🦉 Means

  • Knowing 🧠 what you know ✅
  • Knowing 🧠 what you do not know ❓🤔
  • Knowing 🧠 what you can know 📚 (at a given time ⏰ and place 📍)🔓
  • Knowing 🧠 what you cannot know 🚫 (at a given time ⏰ and place 📍)❓

☪️ Wisdom 🦉 in Islam

Al Quran 📖 and Sayings 💬 of Prophet Muhammad ﮙ are the source 🌱 of Islamic law ⚖️, values 💎 and traditions 📿 and offer timeless wisdom 🦉 for lasting community 🤝. 🕌

Allah ✨ is source of values 💎—justice ('adl) ⚖️, benevolence (ihsan) 💕, compassion (rahmah) ❤️ and wisdom (hikmah) 🦉. Al Quran 📖 lays stress 💪 on hikmah (wisdom) 🦉 more than anything else as it synthesizes 🔗 both reason ('aql) 🧠 and compassion (rahmah) ❤️. One of Allah's ✨ names is Hakim (wise) 🦉.

"God ✨ has not created 🌟 anything better than Reason 🧠 or anything more perfect 💎, or more beautiful 🌸 than Reason 🧠." ✨
— Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

📿 Hazrat Ali as the Most Wise 🦉

Hazrat Ali 📿 described that wisdom 🦉 is the noblest heritage 💎; theoretical 📚 and practical knowledge 🛠️ are the best signs ⭐ of distinction 🏆; deep thinking 🧠 will present the clearest picture 🖼️ of every problem 🧩.

Hazrat Ali 📿 (may Allah ✨ be pleased with him) once said to his son 👨‍👦 Imam Hasan:

"My son 👦, learn 📚 four things from me and through them you will learn 🧠 four more. If you keep them in mind 🧠 your actions 🎯 will not bring any harm ⛔ to you: 📜

🔹 The greatest 🏆 wealth 💰 is Wisdom 🦉💎
🔹 The greatest poverty 📉 is stupidity 🧠❌
🔹 And moderation ⚖️ is the best status ⭐ in all affairs 📋"
