What is Aggression? 🤔👊
Two things must be present:
- 1. Intent to cause physical harm! 🎯😤
- 2. Reasonable expectation harm will happen! ⚠️
- Note: Harming objects (punching wall) is NOT aggression! 🧱❌
Two Types of Aggression 🔀
Hostile Aggression 😡🔥
- Goal = to HURT someone! 💔
- Accompanied by ANGER! 😤
- Emotion-driven! ❤️🔥
- NOT acceptable! ❌
Instrumental Aggression 🎯🏆
- Goal = to WIN or get reward! 💰🥇
- Harm is just a MEANS to an end! 🛠️
- NOT driven by anger! 😐
- ALSO NOT acceptable! ❌
Assertiveness is DIFFERENT! 💪✅
- Using legitimate force to achieve goals! 🎯
- NO intent to harm! ❤️
- This IS acceptable in sports! ✅
- Example: Strong tackle in football (no intent to injure) 🏈
Four Theories of Aggression 🧠📚
1. Instinct Theory (Freud & Lorenz) 🧬
- Aggression is INBORN! 👶
- We're naturally aggressive! 🐯
2. Social Learning Theory (Bandura) 👥📺
- Aggression is LEARNED! 📖
- We copy what we see! 👀
- Kids imitate aggressive athletes! 👦→🏃
3. Moral Reasoning Theory 🧠⚖️
- Higher moral thinking = LESS aggression! 📈😌
- Lower moral thinking = MORE aggression! 📉😤
4. Frustration-Aggression Theory 😤➡️👊
- Frustration leads to aggression! 😡
- When blocked from goals → aggression! 🚧➡️💢
Key Takeaways 🔑
- Both hostile AND instrumental aggression = BAD! ❌❌
- Assertiveness = OK! ✅
- Young athletes copy pros → discourage aggression! 👶👀
- Aggression can be learned OR inborn (debate continues) 🤔
