PSY407 - Sport Psychology

🔑 Four Theories of Exercise Behavior

1. Theory of Reasoned Action

Main Precursor: Intention
Influenced by: Attitude towards exercise + Social norms/pressure
Research supports effectiveness in predicting behavior

2. Theory of Planned Behavior

  • Extension of Reasoned Action
  • Adds: Behavioral control (personal control)
  • Intention + Behavioral Control = Ability to start/maintain
  • Influenced by: Attitude + Perceived social support
  • Supported by research and meta-analyses

3. Transtheoretical Model

Five Dynamic Stages:
1. Precontemplation - No intention to exercise
2. Contemplation - Thinking about exercise
3. Preparation - Planning to exercise
4. Action - Actively exercising
5. Maintenance - Sustaining exercise

Interacting Factors: Self-efficacy, Perception of gains/losses, Psychological obstacles

4. Social Cognitive Theory

  • Explains through self-efficacy
  • Dissatisfied individuals with HIGH self-efficacy + goal-setting = more likely to succeed
  • Belief in one's ability = key predictor

🛡 Fitness as Moderator of Life Stress

Stress Inoculation: Regular exercise protects against physical and psychological stress
Aerobic fitness needed for stronger stress protection
Fit individuals: Less affected by stress/illness/daily hassles
Unfit individuals: More vulnerable to stress and illness

💡 Exam Tips

  • Theory of Reasoned Action: Intention = key (attitude + social norms)
  • Theory of Planned Behavior: Adds behavioral control to Reasoned Action
  • Transtheoretical: 5 stages (Pre, Contemplation, Preparation, Action, Maintenance)
  • Social Cognitive: Self-efficacy as key predictor
  • Stress inoculation: Exercise protects against stress
  • Aerobic fitness needed for stress protection
